Approximately one million outdoor enthusiasts visit Moab every year to enjoy a wide range of recreational activities such as river running and hiking. Just north of town lies the Colorado Riverway Recreation Area, which includes the public lands along the river's banks. Novice rafters will enjoy the section of river along UT 128 because of its lack of large rapids prevalent in Cataract Canyon further downstream. This stretch of road also boasts two scenic hiking trails, Negro Bill Canyon, which leads to a natural bridge, and Fisher Towers, a stunning set of rock spires that rise to a height of 900 feet above the surrounding terrain. Along UT 279, on other side the river downstream, there are two other hiking trails, the Portal Overlook Trail and Corona/Bowtie Arch Trail. By lodging at the Moab Motel 6, you will be less than three miles from the turnoffs to both of these scenic roads.
If you seek scenic viewpoints, put Dead Horse Point State Park on your itinerary.
